Known as a three headed lord, Dattareya is said to embody the Supreme Gods. These indicate the past, the present and the future, the states of awareness; waking up, dreaming and the dreamless sleep. Not only that, it is also said to represent Brahma, for creation; Vishnu, for preservation and Shiva for destruction. There are paintings of him meditating under a Kalpavriksha or a wish tree together with Kamadhenu or wish cow. There would also be a fire pit that acts as the receiver of sacrifice and he would always be surrounded with four dogs of different colors. These dogs represent the four vedas.
Based on tradition, he is considered the most powerful among the incarnated sages to the point that he was almost god himself. This is because he has the powers to create, preserve and destroy all at the same time, being the only one to have the three Hindu gods in his body at once.
Dattatreya lived on earth as a beggar or a fakir who is someone who owns nothing. Aside from a bag and a stick or a trident, he walks around houses and asks for alms or bhiksha. You may be thinking on why a demi - god would go around begging alms but he is no ordinary beggar. Never does he beg for money, bread or rice. He will simply ask for your sins of our present and past life, for this is the alms that he wants.
His name is made out of two words, "Datta", which refers to someone who is given for a gift while "Atreya" is a title of respect for one great sage named Atri. This sage had a son named Atreya and another descendant by the same name. Dattatreya is a "gift" to the sage from the gods Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. He is a very well known figure among religious circles all around India.
He is not just a divine incarnation compared to lord rama and Lord Krishna. He would be held in high respect being a very visible religious figure and physically available as long as we are honest in our faith and dedication to his deeds.
Dattatreya is considered the greatest of all the sages. His divine powers to protect those around him were so great that even Mother Earth took in a form of a cow. She went to the great sage to ask for refuge. This made her under the shelter of the sage's wings.
